Google's Gemini AI assistant reaches one billion users in a landmark moment for the search giant's artificial intelligence push. CEO Sundar Pichai announced on Tuesday that Google's artificial intelligence assistant Gemini has surpassed one billion monthly users, calling it the company's fastest-growing product ever and the 14th Google product to hit the billion-user mark. The figure, shared on social media a week after a major reorganization of Google's AI division, is based on how many people use the Gemini app across Google's ecosystem.

The milestone gives Google a clear audience win even as its AI organization is in flux. Demis Hassabis, Nobel Prize-winning leader of Google DeepMind, recently stepped back from day-to-day management of the lab that designs the Gemini models. Several leading researchers have also left, including Jeff Dean, a central figure in the group's engineering efforts for nearly three decades. Meanwhile, Google's new flagship model, Gemini 3.5 Pro — initially promised for June — has still not been released, while rivals have shipped models seen as stronger, especially for generating computer code, currently the sector's most lucrative use case.

Despite that product lag, Google's installed base remains its main competitive asset as it folds AI into Search, Gmail, Maps, YouTube and more. OpenAI said in July that it reached one billion users across all its interfaces, led by ChatGPT, without clarifying whether the figure was monthly or weekly. ChatGPT's free app launch in November 2022 ignited the current AI boom; OpenAI has since filed a confidential IPO application, and every audience metric feeds into that valuation story. Sensor Tower research also found ChatGPT's market share among AI assistants fell below 50 percent in the first half of the year, as competition tightened from Gemini, China's DeepSeek, and Anthropic's Claude.
